RYA_Training_CentreOne of the strengths of the Royal Yachting Association is its training schemes for all aspects of boating. The principle underlying each of these schemes is Education rather than Legislation, because we believe that a higher standard of competence can be achieved by voluntary training, rather than legislation requiring registration and driver licensing. You can support this principle by your involvement in the RYA National Powerboat Scheme.

If you are the driver of a high-speed powerboat, you have a great responsibility towards other water users. The RYA Powerboat Scheme has been developed to advise you of the responsibility at the same time as training you to handle your boat in a seamanlike manner, so that you and your passengers can all enjoy being afloat.

If your are involved with small boats at whatever level, becoming more proficient means becoming safer – that means being more relaxed and having more fun!

RPM Sea School is a professional RYA Training Centre, recognised to provide training and assessment under the National Powerboat Scheme for levels 1 and 2, First Aid, VHF (DSC) and International Certificate of Competence. Our Training facilities are classroom based at the Boating Centre and on water at Lyme Regis.

The RYA National Powerboat Training Scheme is applicable to sportsboats, RIBs, dories and launches etc., and provides the skills and background knowledge, required to be a competent power boat driver and is the basis for the international certificate of competence. The aim is to teach boat handling and seamanship in a variety of conditions.

The lower age limit for the RYA powerboat courses is 8 years but the RYA do not recommend under 16’s being lift in charge of a powerboat without adult supervision.
